MKI: the environmental cost indicator

The MKI expresses the environmental impact of materials, products and works in euros. Here is what it is, how it relates to the MPG, and where each statement comes from.

In short
01

What it is

The MKI (milieukostenindicator) expresses the environmental impact of materials, products and works in euros, based on a life cycle analysis. The NMD uses it for civil engineering works (GWW), with the same determination method that sits behind the MPG for buildings.

02

Who it applies to

The NMD describes the MKI for civil works, where the result is given in euros. For buildings the same method gives the MPG, in euro per m2 of gross floor area per year. Whether a given tender requires an MKI is something its documents state.

03

What Modou does with it

Modou reads the documents in a tender package (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, IFC2x3, IFC4 and DXF) and lists where they name an MKI requirement. Nothing more. Modou is still in development.

Rules change: check the source

Requirements, limit values and scheme versions change. Treat this page as a reading guide, not as the rule itself, and confirm every figure in the source linked in the table before you rely on it.

What this page does not cover

  • This page does not explain how the weighting factors (shadow prices) are set. We did not find an official page that states it in the sources we read.
  • The weighting factors themselves are not listed here. The NMD says a new set applies from 1 July 2026.
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What does MKI stand for?

Milieukostenindicator, in English environmental cost indicator. According to the NMD it expresses the environmental impact of materials, products and works in euros, based on a life cycle analysis.

What is the difference between the MKI and the MPG?

The NMD uses the same method for both. The MKI is expressed in euros and is used for civil works. The MPG is the buildings variant, in euro per m2 of gross floor area per year.

Did the method change in 2026?

According to the NMD, from 1 July 2026 there are 19 impact categories under EN 15804+A2, and a new set of weighting factors applies.

Where do I find the weighting factors?

Not on this page. Take them from the official method and the NMD, and check which version applies to your project.

Does Modou calculate the MKI?

No. Modou does not calculate the MKI and shows no MKI figure. It reads the documents in a tender package and lists where they name an MKI requirement.
