BREEAM-NL materials credits: what they ask for

BREEAM-NL has credits about the materials in a building. What a credit asks depends on the scheme version your project is registered under, so this page links the official credit pages and says which version each one belongs to.

In short
01

What it is

BREEAM-NL is the Dutch version of the BREEAM sustainability assessment, with guidelines published by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC). Its materials credits cover the environmental impact of building materials (Mat 01) and the responsible sourcing of materials (Mat 03).

02

Who it applies to

Projects that are registered for a BREEAM-NL assessment. Credits change between scheme versions, so check which version your project is registered under before you read a credit page.

03

What Modou does with it

Modou reads the documents in a tender package (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, IFC2x3, IFC4 and DXF) and lists where they name a BREEAM materials requirement. Nothing more. Modou is still in development.

Rules change: check the source

Requirements, limit values and scheme versions change. Treat this page as a reading guide, not as the rule itself, and confirm every figure in the source linked in the table before you rely on it.

Honest about the gaps

What this page does not cover

  • We captured the content of three versions of the Mat 01 credit page but could not tell which scheme version the newest one (page 1538, published 6 June 2024) belongs to. Open the page and check before you use it.
  • The DGBC consultation on a revised Mat 01 closed on 12 August 2025. We do not know what happened afterwards.
  • We have not checked whether Mat 03 still exists in the newest scheme version.
  • Credit points and thresholds are left out on purpose.
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the Mat 01 credit aim for?

On the BREEAM-NL guideline page we read, it aims to identify, encourage and document materials with a low impact over the building life cycle, with attention to the CO2 footprint.

Is Mat 01 the same in every BREEAM-NL version?

No. The official guideline shows different Mat 01 pages for different scheme versions, for example Nieuwbouw 2020 version 1.0 with four components and the older Nieuwbouw en Renovatie 2014 version 2.0, where it is called Mat 1. Link to the version your project is registered under.

What does Mat 03 cover?

The responsible sourcing of building materials. The credit page describes a legal-timber minimum, a sustainable procurement plan and a share of responsibly sourced materials.

Is Mat 01 being revised?

DGBC held a consultation until 12 August 2025 on a revision of Mat 01 for Nieuwbouw en Renovatie Utiliteitsbouw. We did not find what came out of it.

Does Modou calculate BREEAM scores?

No. Modou awards no BREEAM score and does not calculate credits. It reads the documents in a tender package and lists where they name a BREEAM materials requirement.
