Wooden facade cladding

Wooden facade cladding calculator. Boards, battens and fixings.

Enter a wall, a board and a batten spacing. You get a rough order list in a few seconds. Everything is worked out in your browser. What you type stays there; only your contact details are sent, once, before you see the result.

A rough estimate of quantities, not a Modou price and not a quote. Check against your drawings and your supplier's sizes before you order.

How it works out

Plain arithmetic, in this order.

You can check every line with a pocket calculator.

The defaults (140 mm cover, 4 m boards, 600 mm spacing, 10% waste, 7 fixings per metre) are common starting points, not a recommendation. Your supplier's sizes and your cladding detail decide the real values.

  1. Net area = gross area minus openings.
  2. Area with waste = net area times (1 + waste percentage).
  3. Board length = area with waste divided by the cover width in metres. Boards to order = that length divided by the board length, rounded up to a whole board.
  4. Batten length = net area divided by the spacing in metres, times (1 + waste percentage).
  5. Fixings = batten length times fixings per metre, rounded up.
What Modou does today

This calculator needs you to type. Modou reads the package.

Modou reads the specification, drawings and schedules of a tender package and gives quantities traced to their source. You add the prices.

How Modou worksWhy Modou

  • Reads PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, IFC2x3, IFC4 and DXF files.
  • Every quantity points back to the document and place it was read from.
  • Does not measure on 2D line drawings, and does not read DWG or Revit files.
  • Exports to Excel and CSV, plus a CUF XML export for Ibis, Kraan nCalc and Vakware that is still in development.
  • Never supplies a price: you add your own.
Questions

Questions about this calculator.

Is this a price?

No. It only turns areas and sizes into quantities. Modou does not supply prices, and this page does not either: you add your own.

Is anything I type sent to a server?

What you type is not: the sums run in your browser and your input is not stored or sent. Your contact details are, once, before you see the result.

What is cover width?

The width of a board that shows on the wall once it is fitted. It is smaller than the sawn width because of the profile, lap or gap between boards.

What does Modou do with a real tender package?

It reads PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, IFC2x3, IFC4 and DXF files and gives quantities traced to their source, for wooden facade cladding. It does not measure on 2D line drawings and does not read DWG or Revit files. Exports go to Excel and CSV, and a CUF XML export is a pilot. Modou is still in development.
